San Diego New Life Baptist Church
Church History

Saturday, July 19, 1997, at 5:00 p.m., a group of 77 people who were hungry and thirsty for true worship, gathered together in prayer and praise at the Arrow Center on 3030 Market Street to seek God’s guidance and direction. There, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, they organized the San Diego New Life Baptist Church and elected the following officers:

Deacon Board Chairman
Trustee Board Chairman
Church Secretary
Church Treasurer
Sunday School Superintendent

Rev. Troy P. Owens, Sr.
Dea. James Thomas
Dea. Ned Lee
Sis.Billie Gibson
Bro. Vaughn Johnson
Sis. Vondell Cook

Our first Worship Service was held Sunday, July 20, 1997, at the Arrow Center, where we met until July 31, 1997.In August 1997, we moved to the La Mesa Masonic Temple at 4731 Date Avenue, La Mesa, CA  91942, where we worshiped until early September 1997.

In September 1997, we moved to the Naval Training Center in Point Loma, and held our first worship service there,on Sunday, September 14, 1997, in the Chapel by the Bay, which was built in the 1930’s and is now an Historical Landmark.

Although The Chapel-by-the-Bay, with its beautiful stained-glass windows, piped organ, perched pulpit, terra cota tiled flooring, and wooded pews, served our initial purposes and needs, we did however endeavor to overcome several neglected maintenance problems.  Faced with a leaky roof, absolutely no heating system during the freezing winter months and restrooms that were continuously out-of-order, our faith in God never wavered and our commitment to ministry with a spirit of excellence, never faltered.

In January 2001 the Naval Training Center, was scheduled for a major redevelopment and the landlord, McMillan Realty, served us with a notice to move by June 30, 2001. A Search Committee was immediately established, organized and dispatched.  God turned what was initially thought to be bad into our good because, as it turned out, our eviction was just God elevating us from a status as Property Renters to Property Owners.

In fact, three months later,in March 2001, our Sovereign God “Opened up the windows of Heaven and poured us out a blessing.”The Search Committee located a Church for sale in Spring Valley, which was called Fairhaven Baptist Church at 9255 Lamar Street.  In His own omnipotent way, God orchestrated events that led to the Search Committee contacting Fairhaven’s realtor, the day before the property was to be released for sale to the general public.  We made an offer that day, that was accepted within 24 hours! Our new home was in“Ready-to-Move-In” condition, and was already adorned with New Life’s church colors!

On June 2, 2001, we had an exciting “Crossover Celebration Journey,” which was an all-congregation vehicle convoy and parade. Each vehicle was decorated with New Life Baptist Church graffiti. We traveled from the Naval Training Center, all the way to our Promise Land in Spring Valley. After we arrived home at 9255 Lamar Street, we had a Praise and Dance Party that could be heard several blocks away.  Our first Worship Service was held on Sunday, June 3, 2001.

Since then, through God’s favor, we’ve experienced numerous firsts such as:
